In California, hygienists who have obtained an advanced placement degree can treat patients without a dentist's supervision and run a private practice while billing insurance under their NPI number. Out of approximately 25,000 hygienists in California, only about 800 are classified as an RDHAP (Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice). Meet Darla, California's third RDHAP. She is the former president of the CDHA (California Dental Hygienists Association), and a dear friend who makes a remarkable difference in treating special needs children in Northern California.
